The ability to control something is perhaps one of the most satisfying experiences we can have simply because there are so many things in life we can’t control. Maybe you’ve been called a control freak. I guess we all have a little bit of that in us. The dictionary defines control freak as – a person who feels an obsessive need to exercise control over themselves and others and to take command of any situation.
Control can also be a good thing when applied to the right areas. One such area is mastering priorities. Many of us struggle with time management and in an attempt to control it, we often finish the day or week without finishing some of the more important things we planned for.
“Time management is an oxymoron. Time is beyond our control, and the clock keeps ticking regardless of how we lead our lives. Priority management is the answer to maximizing the time we have.” – John C. Maxwell
As Maxwell points out, time is something we can’t make more of but what we can do is order our work by level of priority. Working on the most valuable items first is the key to controlling our time but also to getting the most out of the effort.
