It’s been said that reputation is what you want others to believe about you but character is only developed when no one is looking. Culture is very much the same as character; its developed in private when customers aren’t watching. It’s how you behave away from customers, at the office or on the road. It’s how you speak about your colleagues behind their backs; how you describe your company’s challenges to a colleague or friend; how you support or ignore change. Ultimately, culture is developed one conversation and thought at a time, and eventually forms the basis for how the entire organization behaves. We spend time and money pushing our values, telling the world we believe them but the true test is what happens when no one is looking.
