It’s an important distinction: whether the emphasis for enterprise companies should be to respond to digital business needs by transforming their landscape, or if they should respond by optimizing their current environment.
A recent Gartner study showed that CEOs were nearly split on this topic, showing that transformation was slightly ahead of optimization in their minds – 54% vs 46%.
While there is a clear need to deliver better operating model efficiency as a whole, the general consensus is that enterprises need to transform the mindset, culture, and practices of their organizations to respond better to future technological and customer requirements.
It’s clearly not one or the other, but the focus of one over the other dictates investment, strategy and how much change will be needed.
