Steve Jobs once said “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice” – this speaks to why many organizations struggle with understanding their identity. It’s the crisis of conflict that exists with too many views that ultimately result in a confused or fragmented direction.
The willingness to support change or unwillingness to allow it speaks volumes to the rest of the organization, and this how an identity develops inside a company.
You have those pushing for change and those resisting it. You have those who can see where things need to lead to and those that are uncertain about disrupting the direction. This behavior is what creates the identity crisis some companies deal with – forfeiting a reachable vision for the future because they’re stuck in juggling the now. In the words of Shakespeare – “we know what we are, but not what we may be” .
How do we improve our identity – who we know we are and how that shapes who we’ll become?
