A few years ago a book was published on management by someone in the Agile community and it discussed the negative connotations of those specifically viewed as leaders in the organization. The premise was that titles, while important, don’t remove the responsibility from everyone in the organization to lead in their own, respective capacity. There is much truth to this insight.

If we take it one step further, leadership is something that happens when people are given the forum and the freedom to do it. It’s tempting as a manager to constantly intervene or think that we are needed in every aspect of the decision making or execution process, but micromanagement is so 1990’s

Organizations have moved on, virtual teams are now the norm and the best, uninhibited thinking typically comes from those without all the big titles. As those in senior positions, we must remember that we hired people in order to help us move further than we are now. We must provide the direction, but let’s not then hold onto the map.
