Some people climb the ladder of success only to discover that they were either climbing the wrong ladder or that what was at the top is quite different than what they expected. This is often the case when ambition is a blind spot rather than an asset to fuel the right behaviors.
Ambition is a strong desire to succeed and we need it if we are going to deliver well, develop high performing teams and exceed results. But ambition is something that needs to be well defined and understood so we stay on the right path, towards the right goals.
Ambition should be a positive characteristic found in the team. When it’s lived out correctly it shows up as focused on the right things and avoids shortcuts that risk results. It also prioritizes well and doesn’t let the unimportant tasks come first. Most importantly, ambition doesn’t run out of steam – it starts well but it finished well too.
Ambition can be a good driving force in us but we must focus it because it’s an individual characteristic first. It’s good to be driven unless someone else is doing the driving.
