Clear messages

We’ve written many times in these insights about expectations, and one other aspect of setting expectations is the awareness of ambiguity. While we hope that people can read our minds or intentions, the truth is that they can’t in every situation.

Leaders often find themselves frustrated with team members for behaving a certain way, but those same leaders aren’t always clear about the messages they’re sending. In that case, people will make decisions they believe are best in the absence of clear messages and instruction.

Don’t leave room for misinterpretation, be clear about the messages you send.

You can’t keep team members accountable if you’ve not been clear about what you expect.
