Think back to last week at work. What did you need help with? Rather, what did you need help with but didn’t ask for it? Why do we shy from asking for help in fulfilling the responsibilities of our roles?
Recently, I spent time with someone who has been enormously influential in not only shaping what we now call Silicon Valley, but also in shaping many of the leaders who now reside there.
This person shared that the number one most important quality they’ve observed in the most successful leaders is self awareness. Without any doubt, they said that the ability to ask for help results in making the best choices and decisions about the business. It keeps the feedback flowing and dialogue vibrant.
When we don’t ask for help there’s often just silence because few people are inclined to offer it if they believe you have all the answers.
