“It’s hard to hit a moving target.” This is something we hear often. And indeed, having a clear goal that we can align behind is critical to the success of any endeavor. But how do we know what the right goal is? How do we choose a realistic target for ourselves, one that is stretching but not completely impossible to achieve?
The only way we can do that is by having a clear view of our current situation, supported by data. By knowing how we are really performing now, we can better see where we should focus our improvement efforts to achieve the most value.
But having a goal is not enough. We also need to know whether we are moving towards it. This is again where having a precise understanding of our present position is crucial. Without a baseline, it’s impossible to gauge improvement.
Before you embark on a journey of improvement, are you really clear on where you are starting from and how you might know you’re making progress?
