Advanced strategies for enterprise mobile applications

Mobile technology and user experiences are evolving at a fast pace. Organizations that learn how to leverage this channel for both external and internal audiences will gain an advantage. It’s an area where we have proven expertise, constructing the strategies and solutions to capitalize on user engagement and drive business growth.

Enterprise mobile applications are the future

We know that mobile has grown and is here to stay. When the Apple Store started in 2008 there were just 500 apps – today there are 1.8 million. According to Pew Research, between 2011 and 2019, mobile usage grew by more than 130% – rising from 1 in 3 people to 8 out of 10 people owning a mobile. The consideration for all enterprises is not whether it is ‘mobile first’, but the scalability, maintenance, cost of ownership and operation of mobile. Enterprises that initiate superior mobile offerings, for both employees and customers, are positioning themselves for successful outcomes on many levels. Emergn has proven expertise to help keep your mobile application strategy current and competitive.

Expected benefits from different types of investment in mobile

From a strategic investment:

  • Cross-platform development (multiple mobile operating systems) enables shorter time to market
  • Appending existing internal development resources ensures delivery to market early and often
  • Mobile business applications provide important experiences for enabling mobile workforces

From tactical investments:

  • Better employee and customer experiences on mobile
  • Greater employee engagement across different parts of the business, e.g. company news, administrative tasks required for HR, loyalty programs, etc.
  • Better equipped employees to perform their work duties remotely
Today there is no longer just Android and iOS development. Technologies and tools to build mobile user experiences are rapidly evolving. We now see cross-platform tech as a mature alternative to provide efficient and attractive mobile experiences.

The Emergn approach

We are your partner in creating compelling mobile applications to drive better customer and employee engagement – and more profitable business outcomes. With increasing pressure from demands and competition, it can be difficult to understand where and how to start. Maybe you already have an older mobile app that needs a refresh, or maybe your mobile development team is taking too long to deliver? This is where Emergn can drive your strategy.

Emergn’s experienced mobile app teams can help ideate, architect and build apps that can be deployed to a variety of mobile devices. Our app developers have proven experience in:

  • Native app development, utilizing a single operating system
  • Cross-platform app development, utilizing two or more operating systems, and in connecting to cloud services and your backend enterprise systems

Native and cross-platform development offer their own unique advantages and Emergn is able to guide you on the best way forward for your organization. Your mobile apps will be deployed to the commercial stores (Apple, Android, Amazon, Windows) and/or your internal enterprise catalog. Additionally, statistic gathering of your app usage will help you make decisions on how to develop further.

Mobile applications in 90 days

Emergn’s preferred way forward is with cross-platform development. The two competing platforms (Android and iOS) have different requirements so developing them both is labor-intensive, expensive and slower. Cross-platform development with native add-ons, as needed, yields less code and less testing, resulting in faster time to market. Emergn’s technology of choice is Flutter, and our mobile development team will help you determine if, and how, a cross-platform solution can work for your mobile app.

We use Discovery, Alpha, Beta, Live (DABL) phases to frame incremental product development. To expedite time to market, design thinking initial outputs can be converted into a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with the 90-Day Delivery approach.

During the Discovery phase, we work with your team to understand what mobile apps you currently have or where a mobile app could improve customer and user experiences. From there, we learn what is valuable and build prototypes for testing. Alpha and Beta are cycles that can repeat until we find the right mobile app prototype to solve your business need. For this phase, we learn, test and refine – but quickly – with a goal of delivering an MVP within 90 days. In the Live stage, we are ready to launch an MVP to your customers, users or employees.

In all cases, our approach is to treat mobile development like any other software product development. We believe that unique Product Management and Agile skills applied to engineering excellence, yields great product delivery.

Hotelplan app

Industry: Travel

Our Hotelplan app facilitates ‘on the go’ data and search access, offline data access and multi-channel marketing for traveling customers. The development was undertaken natively for two major platforms, iOS and Android, with the objective of providing the added value and convenience to existing customers of relevant information about their travels. The availability of the app on the App Store also raised brand awareness and attracted new customers. Within the first 6 months of the launch, the app was downloaded over 20,000 times.

Internal apps for large enterprise application software provider

Industry: Telecoms & Tech

This global company has employees located around the world and needed a more efficient way to connect with them. We developed three internal employee mobile apps to drive engagement:

  • The Pricing app enables instant, ‘anytime/anywhere’ access to on-premises and cloud price lists via iPad or iPhone, for faster and more accurate sales and customer enquiry information
  • The Sales app provides the means for a dispersed, worldwide sales force to interact with colleagues, faster and more efficiently, with instant access to the information and tools they need to maintain and drive sales
  • The Corporate News app provides a more engaging, less rigid, channel for employees to receive relevant notifications, along with the latest company alerts and news.

This global company has employees located around the world and needed a more efficient way to connect with them. We developed many internal employee mobile apps to drive engagement – here are three highlights:

  • The Pricing app enables instant, ‘anytime/anywhere’ access to on-premises and cloud price lists via iPad or iPhone, for faster and more accurate sales and customer enquiry information
  • The Sales app provides the means for a dispersed, worldwide sales force to interact with colleagues, faster and more efficiently, with instant access to the information and tools they need to maintain and drive sales
