My Emergn journey: Camila’s experience in talent acquisition and HR

Meet Camila Souto, Global Talent Acquisition Manager and HR Lead at Emergn. With more than 10 years of experience in recruitment and HR, Camila has built her career around people. From interviewing students in a university organization to now shaping the end-to-end employee journey across several countries.

Tell us a bit about your backstory and how you got started

My career in HR started by chance. I studied management at university, and while I was part of a student organization, I was allocated to their HR team. At first, I honestly didn’t know what HR really did or what its purpose was.

When I started conducting interviews, I immediately realized how much I enjoyed connecting with people and helping make decisions that enabled an organization to thrive. That experience was the trigger. From that day, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in HR and recruitment.

What’s your role at Emergn, and how long have you been with the company?

I’ve been at Emergn for four years now. I started as a Talent Acquisition Specialist, focused on building our team in Portugal. After about a year, I was invited to lead the team, and since then, I’ve been managing our Talent Acquisition function globally.

Very recently, I accepted a new challenge. I’ve taken on additional responsibilities and joined the HR team. I’m now also HR Lead for Portugal, the UK, and the US, which means I’m involved in the full employee journey. Having that end-to-end view is a great challenge and something I’m really enjoying.

Tell us about the work you’re most proud of

One of my proudest achievements has been building and leading a remote, multicultural team. Managing people across different countries isn’t always easy, but we’ve managed to create strong connections, even at a distance. I’m proud when I see my team thrive, develop new skills, and achieve their own career goals.

On the recruitment side, I love seeing the people I helped hire grow, get promoted, and make a big impact here. Knowing that I contributed to their journey is very rewarding.

How would you describe culture at Emergn?

I really identify with “The Emergn Way” principles. Especially our focus on caring for people. Being in HR and being a people person, this matters a lot to me. And I feel I’m a strong example that this isn’t just a slogan. I’ve had real opportunities to grow inside Emergn. So, when we say we care for and invest in people, it’s real.

Emergn stands out for its global perspective. Here, you have colleagues from all over the world, real flexibility, and constant exposure to different cultures and ways of working. I also appreciate the openness to new ideas. We’re working with a very modern tech stack, which is attractive to both candidates and people who want to keep learning.

The environment is friendly and supportive. People are not only great at their jobs, but they are also genuinely great people – fun, motivated, and easy to work with. That makes a huge difference.

Outside of work, what’s something people should know about you?

My biggest passion outside of work is traveling. I love exploring new places and cultures. I once spent three months backpacking through Asia.

More recently, my free time is very much focused on my son. I became a mother last year, and I’m about to combine my two passions with our first trip together – a very different kind of adventure, but one I’m really looking forward to!

What advice would you give your younger self or someone just starting out?

Stay curious and be humble. When you’re starting out (or at any stage, really), be willing to learn from others and ask lots of questions. There’s always something to learn. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s normal, and the important thing is how you deal with them and move forward.
