Variety is the spice of life

You’ve all heard the saying that ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. It’s often when observing working processes and practices that you come across checklist behaviors. That is, people and teams going through processes, blind to whether they’re adding any value or not.

Teams can walk through life in a zombie like state rather than fully engaging in the practice or process. It’s easy for things to get stale. It’s everyone’s job to stay vigilant to this problem. One way to combat this is to rotate people who run the team processes and practices, or introduce someone from another team to facilitate a workshop. Or you might try to add variety to a standard practice or ceremony from time-to-time. For example, introduce one-week a month where completely different retrospectives are run.

Think about your working practices and processes. Are they feeling stale? Where might you introduce some variety? Is there something you can do to spice things up a little?
