Alex Osterwalder says that the biggest problem trying to run a startup like it’s an established company is that the business model hasn’t been discovered.
He (and Steve Blank before him) suggest that the most important part of growing a new business is to search. That is search for the right question to answer, the right solution to that question, search for customers, search for a viable business model and search for scale. Most established companies lose their ability to search because they found something that worked. As business models are being disrupted, customers are gaining more choice and technology continues to march on, existing and established enterprises are having to get back into the mode of searching.
At the heart of any search is a mindset of exploration and discovery.
